The term ‘net zero’ refers to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming to zero by balancing what is emitted into the atmosphere with what is absorbed and stored by carbon sinks. This is also known as ‘carbon neutrality’ or ‘climate neutrality’.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world must reach net zero emissions by roughly 2050 in order to meet the Paris Agreement aim of keeping global warming to 1.5°C. The 2050 date was then incorporated into the Glasgow Climate Pact, which was agreed to at COP26 in 2021. The Pact’s signatories acknowledge that “limiting global warming to 1.5°C necessitates rapid, deep, and sustained reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions.”
